Residential Structure Fire At Wintergreen

May 11, 2008 - Wintergreen Fire and Rescue Personnel responded to a reported fully involved structure fire in a single family residential structure on North Forest Drive located on Wintergreen Mountain. Upon arrival of the initial apparatus the 2 story/2,000 sq. ft. cedar sided structure was found fully involved with fire and in the initial stages of collapse. Effective defensive operations, made challenging by dense fog, prevented the spread of fire to nearby structures and wildland areas. The ignition source was suspected to be a lightning strike during heavy thunderstorms which passed through the area several hours earlier. 14 career and volunteer members responded from Wintergreen with 8 pieces of Wintergreen Fire and EMS apparatus, with assistance of 10 members from neighboring departments. Many thanks to Rockfish Volunteer Fire Dept., Wilson Volunteer Fire Dept, Augusta County Fire Rescue, Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad, Wintergreen Police Department, and Wintergreen Partners Inc., whom all assisted with either manpower on scene or covering the Wintergreen response area during the event.
