911 Address Signage

Emergency services at Wintergreen at times have had difficulty finding houses in a timely fashion due to extreme variances in signage, or the total lack of an address sign.

Nelson County requires that house numbers be posted with a minimum of 3-inch numbers on a contrasting color background. Even county compliant signs are difficult to see at night because the numbers aren’t reflective.

“Add fog, darkness, snow, and urgency to the equation and what you come up with is a bad situation,” explains Wintergreen Fire and Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets. “Many of the signs are only visible from one direction of travel.”

To address this problem, Wintergreen Fire and Rescue urges property owners to clearly and carefully have their addresses readable from the road.

Fire and Rescue offers individual reflective address signs approved by the Wintergreen Property Owners Association. These signs are in the style of Wintergreen’s attractive street signage, a brown reflective background with white reflective letters.

Fire and Rescue staff will install two signs (one for each direction) on mailbox posts for $30. Those on the mountain using the popular Wintergreen icon address signs can have one reflective 4-inch by 12-inch sign applied to the wooden sign for $15. Other options are available as well.

To order and schedule an installation use the form below. To keep production costs down, new signs are ordered and installed by staff once a quarter. You will be contacted before the signs you order are installed. Payment is not required until the signs are in hand.
