Lockn' 2016 - We did it again!
From Chief Curtis Sheets
August 29th, 2016 - We did it again! We made it through a colossal multi-day special event during some of the worst heat our region has seen this year.
By the numbers:
- 917 total patient contacts.
- 313 transports via cart to main medical for extended care.
- Over 400 bags of IV normal saline were "spiked".
- 23 persons were transported via ambulances to three different hospitals.
- One person was flown to UVA.
- Over 4,000 labor hours were logged.
- 560 meals consumed by EMS staff.
- Nearly 100 "shift exchanges" tracked by staff daily.
- 10 consecutive days of EMS coverage. (including set-up and tear-down)
Lockn' has become one of the largest special events in Virginia. It's because of you and people like you that Wintergreen EMS is able to pull this off.
Our "E-Shift" providers, full & part-timers, and volunteers of both[Staff] Wintergreen Rescue & Wintergreen Fire did an amazing job. There are very few things on my list of things to do differently next year. I'm not just saying this to be saying it.... I really do think that our team was hitting on all cylinders this year. The conditions were miserable, yet you couldn't tell it by watching the performance of our crew.
I also want to thank those who picked up extra shifts at Wintergreen during the event to be certain our home-base was covered. And of course thanks to all those who simply assisted with getting the equipment back in service.
Speaking of equipment, this year our medical carts which are typically provided by the promoter ended up on a flatbed somewhere between VA and CA, but definitely not in Nelson County. Special thanks to our mutual-aid partners Amherst Public Safety and Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, as well as Wintergreen Resort for coughing up Utility Vehicles.
Phillips Healthcare Inc. provides our cardiac monitors and AEDs each year (free of charge) and they deserve recognition. Monitors are very expensive and having a strong partnership with Phillips really makes our job much easier.
Assisting me this year on the core-management team were Mike Riddle, Trey Crawford, Barry Eastep, and Brad Moser (aka logistics Brad). RW held down the 2A-8A command shift each night, and I really appreciate his efforts. Tent bosses were the usual Betsy Smith and Blee Moffett. Core doctors were Dr. Just & Dr. Lindbeck. Supply guy was Nick Brown. MANY others played very significant roles, however I would be remiss if I didn't point out that this core team eats, breathes, and sleeps Lockn' for one week of their life each year.
I'm more proud of our performance at Lockn' than anything else we do all year. I'm so very proud of you. This is the annual stress-test for our entire organization and we passed with flying colors!
