Structure Fire - Nelson County

Wintergreen Fire Department and NEMS were dispatched for a possible structure fire at a residence in Nelson County with possible animal entrapment. When crews arrived on scene they noted heavy smoke and flames from side A. The homeowner(s) were able to evacuate the residence, however they had two pets that were still trapped in a room on the 2nd floor. Two deputies attempted to gain access to the 2nd floor room using a ladder but were unsuccessful due to heavy smoke. As firefighters arrived on scene they were able to get the dogs to the adjacent roof and then to the ground where the Deputies and EMS were able to initially treat the two dogs. The dogs were later taken to the vet and both are doing well now. There were no other injuries reported at this incident. The fire was quickly extinguished and crews continued with overhaul. Crews on scene were Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, Nelson EMS, Wintergreen Tanker 62, Lovingston Fire Department, Piney River Fire Department, Faber Fire Department, Rockfish Fire Department, and North Garden.
